Joanna
Finch is a uniquely entertaining singer/songwriter who swings smoothly
between jazz/blues and original, contemporary folk. Her songs have been
described as tender, biting, quirky and sensual. Her voice conveys spine
tingling emotion and she is renowned for her captivating stage presence.
Joanna's influences are as divergent as her writing style with comparisons
made to Jane Siberry, Cole Porter and Tom Waits.
In
The Arms Of Morpheus, Joanna’s debut solo CD, was released in stores
in December. The songs are diverse, well crafted and beautifully arranged.
These twelve original songs are a fine representation of the immense talent
of this Vancouver Island singer/songwriter. Some of Western Canada's most
celebrated musicians are showcased including Juno Award winners, Zubot
and Dawson, Buff Allen, Ken Lister, Miles Black, John Reischman, and several
others including producer, guest guitarist Pat Coleman. (www.roadhouserecords.ca)
Joanna
and her Comox Valley trio are preparing for their spring Islands Tour
which will take them gigging up to May, when Joanna switches gears to
co-produce and star in the award winning Vaudeville/ Cabaret show, Madame
Jojo’s Cabaret, set to open at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay
for two
nights, on the 29th and 30th of June.
What
others are saying about ‘In The Arms of Morpheus’…
“A
team of Vancouver's elite jazz masters back Joanna Finch's expressive
vocal's on the singer's stunning, eclectic debut, In the Arms of Morpheus.
Finch wrote or co-wrote all dozen tracks, and it's an impressive collection
of wise well-crafted songs brilliantly arranged and produced by veteran
guitarist Pat Coleman.”
Joseph Blake freelance reviewer for Victoria Times Colonist, Boulevard
Magazine, Coda, All About Jazz (etc.) January 22, 2006
“Her
original lyrics range from the seductive to the very funny and always
tell a story that engages the audience. These songs will resonate in your
heart long after the music has stopped."
Paula Wild- Author, Arts Reviewer for the Record
“There
is a playful yearning underneath each of the songs on this
CD, as though Finch is trying to take us somewhere beautiful, somewhere
out of time, where we can all say hello to a part of ourselves that we
thought we had lost a long time ago.”
Terrence Young, Award Winning Author January 12, 2006
“As
a live performer Joanna is a force to be reckoned with… “Skeletons"…and
"Sticky" successfully invite you into the zany world that is
hers alone.”
vig schulman- Artistic Director of the Cumberland VILLAGE
WORKS.
“In
the Arms of Morpheus is a complex and varied recording… Established
artists…Dianna Krall and Norah Jones will be interested in some
of Joanna songs for their own albums. …exposure will bring Joanna
into the national and international sphere.…now, she is a local
treasure on the threshold of greatness.”
Mary Lynne DesRoches, special to Cosmic
Debris Musicians Magazine
“Finch
has a wonderful sense of lyrical pacing, the sounds of her words always
enhancing the musicality of the melodic line. …the lyrics are sophisticated,
adult celebrations of the beautiful agony of love in all its consummations
and separations, reveling in romanticism.”
Danny Zanbilowicz-, Editor of The
WORD
"
‘In The Arms of Morpheus’…is at times haunting, at times
wickedly tongue in cheek…take lyrics that have a double meaning,
add her incredibly seductive voice – and you have music that sends
shivers up your spine! My favourite cut, of course, is “Skeletons
In My Closet”.
